Memo 001: Meet the Assistant.

A. Action for 1337 Benny Road.

[The first thing Miss Pauling notes when she opens her eyes is how bright the bedroom is. She shuts her eyes tightly, having not yet readjusted to the light. However, when she opens them up again, she immediately notes something else.

The walls around her weren't coloured purple.

Confused, she reaches for her glasses at the bedside table, only to note that they weren't her usual optic wear either. They were just the wrong shape.]

That's strange, where are my glasses...?

[Her hands fumbled around for her familiar pair of spectacles, until she accidentally knocked over the lamp with a resounding smash.]

Ooops.

Hello? Is there anyone there? I...I think I've been kidnapped!

[Goes to sit at the table, hooking a leg over his knee.]

I 'ave brought zhe notes I 'ave collected zhus far. It 'as zhe basic information, but 'as not been updated since March, I believe.

[He holds out the introductory letter (http://buildstherobots.livejournal.com/12857.html) and a map of the town.]

(She takes it from him and flips through it quickly.)

Thank you very much, Spy. It's clear that this town's a lot more dangerous than it looks.

How have you been holding up?

[He shrugs.] Well enough, I suppose. I 'ave yet to die, which counts for somezhing, I would say.

Do you 'ave any ozzer questions zhat were not answered by zhat sheet?

(She places a glass of water in front of him before she asks her question.)

Yes, actually. I'd like to know about the rest of the RED team, and the BLU team, if possible. How has everyone else been faring here, have there been any changes in behavior, what they are up to, and so on.

I am afraid I 'ave not been doing my job as well as I should. I 'ave been pursuing ozzer zhings in zhe time I 'ave been 'ere, so I am not as up to date as I should be.

I can give you information about bozh Pyros, your "'usband", and a bit on zhe ozzer BLU members, Medic, Scout, and Spy.

That's alright. Staying alive should be your number one priority here, after all.

And I'd definitely like to hear what you have to say about them.

Well, zhe BLU Pyro is unaware of my location and it will continue as such, but I know zhat 'e lives on 1490 Kramden Road. 'E never stays 'ome-- at least, not for more zhan a few hours. 'Is "wife", Ilsa Higa, manages to keep 'im at 'ome some'ow. I am lead to believe zhey are at least friends. 'E is often out during late hours, which I assume is due to insomnia.

Zhe RED Pyro lives wizh me. She is stuck as a 'ousewife and often gets restless. She must 'ave some sort of flame on 'er at all times and is prone to violence and general unpleasantness. She does not like to be alone unless specified.

Zhe RED Sniper is razzer mundane. I know many personal facts, some of which you may also know, and I would not like to tell you wizout 'is permission. 'Ere in Mayfield 'e spends most of 'is time in zhe shooting range or at 'ome, if not at work. 'E is razzer paranoid, always looking for M. Bleu, and 'e is very cautious when it comes to zhe town's tricks. 'E 'as been 'ere for a year at least, if I recall correctly.

[He takes a sip of the water with a quiet, "merci."] Are you keeping up?

(She just writes everything down the RED Spy says quickly. It's a relief that none of the BLUs got stuck with the REDs; she wouldn't want to deal with breaking up the friendship if that ever happened.)

The Spy's reluctance to tell her about the RED Sniper's personal facts strikes her as slightly odd; the Spy seemed perfectly happy to spill the beans on the RED Pyro, and she is fairly certain that the Spy and the Sniper, while cordial with each other, weren't exactly best buddies back in their world. And how does the RED Spy know about those personal facts, but not the ones related to the Pyros?

Her expression never changes, but she's gotten a bit suspicious of things. Nevertheless, she'll play it cool for now.)

[He nods.] While I 'ave conversed wizh zhe BLU Scout, I do not know much besides zhe fact zhat 'e as also been 'ere for a while. 'E 'as gained many of 'is weapons back in 'is time 'ere. 'E also 'as a position as a police officer of zhe town, which means zhat 'e will seek out trouble makers while 'e is droned.

You do know about zhat, oui? Zhe droning?

Yes, I have. It...it sounds very bad. You lose sense of who you are, and you start to think that everything Mayfield tells you is true.

Have there been any of the RED or BLU team who have been droned?

Oui, I am certain zhat zhe BLU Scout and Spy 'ave been droned at least once, as well as zhe Sniper. A few weeks ago, zhere was an incident wizh zhe milkman zhat caused droned prisoners to become very violent-- driven to kill, you see.

I believe I was droned once, but I do not recall properly. Zhere was a week where I do not remember anyzhing, so zhe only explanation to zhat was being droned.

That...must have been awful for you.

Since we're on the topic though, I'd just like to put this out first; if you're ever droned, Mr.Spy, and you're coming after me, I may have to kill you. Likewise, if the same ever happens to me, you're welcome to stab me in the back.

How about the BLU Spy? What has he been up to?

I cannot remember it, zhus it cannot be considered a bad time for me. [He smiles wryly.] I am certain I was as 'appy as can be.

I understand zhe circumstances, mademoiselle, do not worry. [As he says this, he slumps a little, his smile tired.

He shrugs.] Nozzing of great importance, as far as I know. 'E goes around in a civilian guise, so 'e may be able to cause mischief. 'E 'as also regained quite a few of 'is weapons, so 'e is razzer dangerous-- but only if provoked.

I'll make sure to keep on his good side then. Do you happen to know his civilian identity here?

(She notes the slump, and wonders whether he's alright. There's a flicker of concern in her eyes that vanishes soon though.)

No, unfortunately. While 'e does 'ave a recognizable face underneazh zhat mask, I 'ave not been around town enough to find 'im. Zhere are quite a lot of people in zhis town, you see.

[He downs the rest of the water and takes a quick look around the house. At least Sniper won't have to tie up his "wife" anymore...]

Well, I suppose as long as he's still alive and well...

(She suddenly looks around her carefully before she leans in closer to him.)

There's a reason why I wanted to speak to you face to face actually.

(Her voice is low and urgent, and she's got a completely serious face on.)

I know that while we're here, you do not have any obligation to carry out anything I say, but...I would like to ask for your assistance in some matters. I called you here because I was worried that the phone could potentially be bugged.

Zhe phone line? I am not certain zhat it is bugged, mais it is an open phone line. Unless you filter your calls, everyone can listen in on your conversation. And when I say everyone, I do mean everyone.

(Blinks once. Twice.)

Oh.

(She feels very incredibly stupid now.)

I...I didn't know that...

[He smiles.] It is alright, you are new 'ere. Zhere is no way you could 'ave known. At least you know now, oui?

I...I suppose...

It's a good thing that I'm having this conversation with you here then...

I need you to find out more about the other civilians in this town. Who's a danger to us, who's a potential ally, whether there are any resistances, whether there are any who are actually working with the forces that are keeping us here. I'd rather not get any of us involved with any of these factions until we know who we might be going up against, and who could potentially be on our side when we do this. Get to know anyone who stands out in this town. We have to pick our fights carefully here.

(Her voice turns on a pleading tone.)

I...I know it's a lot to ask for, and you're no longer obligated to listen to me. But I think it'd be the best choice of action, if we are to get back home in one piece. As your second-in-command back home, I just want to see all of you safe.

[He's silent as he reaches into his jacket for his cigarette case. He takes his time lighting up and speaks once he releases a puff of smoke.]

I can do zhis for you. I never really found zhe point of trying to find a sort of resistance, as I doubt zhat we could ever escape zhis place, but I could never refuse a request from such a beautiful woman.

[He smiles at her.] I 'ave been razzer bored lately, after all. It is zhe least I can do for you, mademoiselle.

(She blushes. Both the Spies always have this effect on her.)

Listen Mr Spy, the thing is...I'd like for all of us to stay out of any of this resistance or alliance business. As far as I've heard, the authorities in Mayfield have all the power so far. I'd rather that we all try to stay alive and non-droned. The information would be useful to us because it'll not only keep us alive, but it can be used as bargaining tools, should we ever need to resort to such matters.

Do not worry. I would not be too fond of joining a group who seems intent on leaving when zhere is obviously no ways of escape.

[He takes another drag.] Staying wizh my team, 'owever, is somezhing I can do. I would razzer stick to zhat, at least, zhan join disillusioned fools. I 'ave been 'ere quite a while, mademoiselle. I know 'ow to stay alive.

[He exhales with a wry smile.] For zhe most part, at least.

(She's still slightly flustered by the Spy's offhand comment from before, though thankfully the red color on her cheeks is slowly fading away.)

That's...that's good.

Speaking of the team, would you happen to know where everyone is staying at the moment? Just in case we need to group together for any of the dangerous events that Mayfield throws at us.

And umm...could you show me how to filter the calls? I'm not too sure...

Well, you are staying wizh zhe Sniper, oui? Zhe Pyro is living wizh me.

As for zhe BLUs, I only know of zhe BLU Pyro's whereabouts, as mentioned earlier. I am certain you would 'ave better luck wizh finding zheir locations-- at least, if you were to ask zhem in person. I suppose I 'ave a bit of sneaking around to do, do I not?

[He chuckles around his cigarette.]
